“Trust is earned, respect is given, and loyalty is demonstrated. The betrayal of
any one of those is to lose all three.”
❃ Brief History
House Lebedev began as a humble farming family, using their knowledge of the land to build a thriving trade network that strengthened the Sanctuary’s economy. Through generations of hard work and resilience, they created lasting prosperity, ensuring their people never went without. Their success wasn’t just about wealth—it was about stability and service to the Sanctuary. Even through hardship and separation, their legacy endured. Now, as the family rebuilds, they remain committed to upholding the values that have defined them for generations.
❃ Values & Etiquette
❖ ◦ ≻ The Arts
House Lebedev has a deep-rooted love for the arts, with nearly every member possessing some musical interest or talent. From grand musical performances to exquisite paintings, they cherish and collect artistic works, ensuring they are shared with the public rather than kept behind closed doors. These treasures are fiercely protected, reflecting the family's dedication to cultural preservation. It is tradition for every child born into House Lebedev to learn an instrument of their choosing, fostering a lifelong appreciation for music and the arts.
❖ ◦ ≻ Marriage & Death
Marriage is a union of love, regardless of identity. While marrying below one's station is discouraged, it is not forbidden. House Lebedev values love above status, encouraging its members to choose partners based on genuine affection rather than social or political gain. However, marriage is considered a lifelong commitment, and divorce is only permitted in extreme circumstances, such as proven abuse or infidelity.
Upon death, the body is kept in a cooler until the weather clears. Once conditions permit, a small canoe is crafted to fit the deceased, lined with treasured trinkets, family offerings, and a bed of straw. The body is then prepared– wrapped in fleece, adorned with white string to symbolize purity and passage– before being placed upon the straw.
When the time comes, the canoe is sent adrift into the sea. A burning arrow is loosed, striking near the vessel, igniting the straw, and setting the canoe ablaze– a final farewell as the flames carry the departed beyond.
❖ ◦ ≻ Hierarchy
The title of Head of House is traditionally passed to the eldest child, though they have the right to refuse it. If declined, the title moves to the next child in line until once accepts. Should no child be willing to take on the role, the previous Head of House may appoint a successor of their choosing. In the event of the Head's passing, the eldest child serves as acting Head until a new leader is chosen by vote among the current children.
❖ ◦ ≻ Indulgences
As a family that rose from humble beginnings, House Lebedev values moderation and generosity. They take only what they need, offering the rest to those in need. Surplus produce is often donated to charities and hospitals in the Sanctuary or traded with local shops and taverns to support the community.
Alcohol and tobacco use among the family is rare, though not frowned upon or forbidden. However, overindulgence in either is considered improper, as self-restraint and responsibility are key values of House Lebedev.
❖ ◦ ≻ Formalities
Proper greetings and interactions differ between men and women in House Lebedev tradition. Men are expected to bow at the waist when introducing themselves, while women perform a respectful nod, keeping their heads lowered for three seconds. Additionally, women must maintain a barrier of fabric, such as gloves or a handkerchief, when making physical contact with others. This rule is far more lenient for men, who are not required to use fabric and may engage in touch more freely.
